Update 1/7/21

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) UPDATES

Update 3/ 14 /21

COVID Protective Plan: AKBA’s COVID Mitigation Plan for operating in compliance with Alaska Department of Health and Social Service and the Municipality of Anchorage

  1. AKBA Client Screening Questions Conducted Electronically, Before a Trip

    1. Are you experiencing the current CDC recognized symptoms consistent with COVID-19? Symptoms include: cough, fever or chills, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath, loss of smell or taste, decreased appetite, diarrhea, sore throat, headache, runny nose, nausea, unusual fatigue or symptoms of acute respiratory illness.

    2. Have you been vaccinated (you are at least 2 weeks post second shot if a 2 shot regimen, or 2 weeks post single shot if single shot regimen like Johnson and Johnson vaccine?

    3. Have you been in contact with a suspected or positive case of COVID-19 within the past 14 days?

    4. If recovering from a suspected or proven positive case of COVID-19, are you more than 10 days from the onset (or positive test if asymptomatic) or more than 72 hours since the end of significant symptoms or fever?

    5. If traveling from out of state, have you had a negative result from a test taken within 72 hours of coming to the state, or a negative result from a test taken at the airport before joining the trip? How long have you been in the state?

    6. Will you inform the guide if you become sick within 10 days of the trip?

    7. Do you recognize that despite good screening and social distancing practices, engaging in any group activity increases your risk of contracting COVID-19?

  2. AKBA’s COVID Guiding Operations with Social Distancing

    1. AKBA does not offer client transportation to trailheads. This remains the case for the 2020 season. Clients are responsible for their own way to trailhead. Non-household members need to take separate ways to get to the trailhead.

    2. AKBA’s guide ratio should not exceed one guide to 4 guests (1:4) for any trip.

    3. Reservations only on our website or by phone. Walk-ins prohibited. We only do electronic payment methods.

    4. For our overnight trips, non-household members are prohibited from sharing any cabin, tent, or other lodging.

    5. Campsites and tent sites must be spaced apart, with no site being occupied within 25 feet of another by non-household members.

    6. Cloth face coverings must be worn by all employees and clients anytime not moving and encourage them to wear during movement.

    7. Social distancing of at least six feet is maintained between non-household members in common areas of the trail and parking lot while not moving.

    8. Social distancing of at least 20 feet while moving is maintained between non-household members on the trails.

    9. AKBA will notify the public of our COVID -19 Mitigation Plan on our website that clearly states that any person with symptoms consistent with COVID-19 may not go on a guided trip.

  3. AKBA Hygiene Protocols

    1. AKBA will have an adequate supply of hand sanitizer for every trip. We will encourage clients to bring hand sanitizer as well.

    2. AKBA will continue to have adequate amounts of rubber gloves in the first aid kit in case a client has a medical issue.

    3. AKBA will provide new and sterile bandanas for clients to use and take to prevent spitting on the ground or blowing one's nose.

    4.  AKBA will provide touch-point sanitization on the bicycles before and after every trip (e.g., grips, handlebar, saddle, trigger shifters, bike frame, helmets)

    5. AKBA provides new water bottles to every client with water and snacks that are individually packaged to eliminate cross contamination of food.

    6. Linens, Clothing, and Other Items That Go in the Laundry

  • In order to minimize the possibility of dispersing virus through the air, AKBA will not shake dirty laundry, sleeping bags or tents.

  • Wash items as appropriate in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. If possible, launder items using the warmest appropriate water setting for the items and dry items completely. Dirty laundry, sleeping bags or tents that have been in contact with an ill person can be washed with other people’s items.

  • Clean and disinfect hampers or other carts for transporting laundry according to guidance above for hard or soft surfaces.

  1. AKBA Employee screening

    1. Conduct pre-shift screening and maintain staff screening log.

    2. No employee displaying symptoms of COVID-19 will be permitted to guide a trip within 14 days of symptom onset or 72 hours of symptoms, unless they test negative for COVID while symptomatic, in which case they will not work until they are symptom free for 72 hours.

    3. An employee who becomes sick while at work should be immediately sent home.

    4. No person may work within 72 hours of exhibiting fever.

    5. Symptomatic or ill employees may not report to work.

  2. In The Event Of Occurrence

    1. When an active employee is identified as being COVID-19 positive by testing, CDC cleaning and disinfecting must be performed as soon after the confirmation of a positive test as practical. In lieu of performing CDC cleaning and disinfecting, the guiding businesses may shut down for a period of at least 72 consecutive hours to allow for natural deactivation of the virus, followed by site personnel performing a comprehensive disinfection of all common surfaces.

Update 3/31/20

We can all benefit from a professional bike fit, but hard to do during the "social distancing" time. We still want to feel comfortable on the bike, right? At the moment, it's tough for a bike fitter to properly perform a physical assessment on riders. The assessment provides the fitter a lot of useful and necessary information to properly adjust your bicycle during a 2-hour bike fit. Grande (professional bike fitter) is providing basic tips you can do at home to adjust your bike so that you feel more comfortable on rides by addressing three things: seat height, saddle fore/aft position (moving the saddle forward or back. Not to exceed saddle rail specifications) and reach (distance from saddle to handlebar). This is not a professional bike fit, but merely suggestions to get a good bike sizing.

Update 3/26/20

Anchorage residents turn to trails for sanity, fresh air and positive outlook during these times.

Update 3/25/20

Alaska Bike Adventures wants to encourage people to ride bikes in a safe way. We will use video format to educate the public about trail conditions or tips related to cycling.

Update 3/21/20

Alaska Bike Adventures will be postponing any trips in March and April due to the pandemic of respiratory disease spreading from person-to-person caused by the novel coronavirus (COVID -19).

From the first day we opened, Dusty and Grande (AKBA owners) were already implementing ways to sanitize equipment before and after trips. We will continue to do that once we start our trips up again and will do even more. We take this situation very seriously!

Although we are closed for this moment in time, we encourage the public to get outside and continue to ride a bike. It is safe to ride a bike outside! In fact, it’s safer to be outside than inside when it comes to disease transmission.

Bicycling Magazine has provided helpful information about how to ride safely.

  • Don’t share water bottles.

  • Practice good cough etiquette by coughing and sneezing into your arm, not your hand.

  • Wash your hands with soap and water after using the bathroom (or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer if you’re unable to wash your hands for any reason).

  • Consider bringing hand sanitizer or wipes to use after portable toilets.

  • Cleanse hands with hand sanitizer or soap and water after any possible contamination and before eating.

  • Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from stray droplets.
